Youth Activities at the Expo

Youth Speak Out LoungeStudents and youth are invited to the Youth Speak Out Lounge at the 2007 Living Green Expo. Located in an outside tent on the Expo Plaza, this friendly space will be hosted by young leaders from environmental clubs at area high schools and colleges.

Learn about the impacts of global warming with videos from Will Steger’s current artic expedition, see how students are creating cool campuses and communities throughout Minnesota, assess your own eco-impact by taking the Minnesota Energy Challenge, learn about school energy audits and campus wind turbines, be part of spoken-word art, music, videos, zines—even pedal a bike to make a free smoothie!

Saturday (May 5)

All Day

Lounge Area with couch and bean bag chairs provided by Bridging Inc. and a pedal-powered smoothie blender using fresh, organic fruit donated by the Wedge Co-op.

Displays from organizations working with students and youth, including the Will Steger Foundation, School for Environmental Studies, Mac CARES, the Minnesota Energy Challenge for Schools, Green Slow Moving Vehicles, Alliance for Sustainability, and Earth Fusion Sierra Student Coalition.

10 a.m.

Installing Renewable Energy Projects on Your Campus
Ever wondered what you can do to make your school more sustainable? Find out how students at Macalester (St. Paul) and the School for Environmental Studies (Apple Valley) got wind turbines installed on campus.

11 a.m. to Noon
Report from our visit to Arctic Villages
Hear from Allison Mills, a student from the School for Environmental Studies, who recently returned from a trip to Baffin Island with Will Steger.

Allover Painting: Creating a Natural World
Muralist/artist Ta-coumba Aiken leads this mural workshop for students of all ages in creating a beautiful landscape.

Noon

Student Eco-Action Jam
Here's your chance to make connections with other passionate students, and get ideas about what you can do to make a difference! A panel of high school and college environmental club leaders will share how to start an environmental club in your school. Find out how to organize your school to save energy. Meet with college mentors to establish a year-round network for sustainability.

1:30 p.m.

Eco Fashion Show: Green is the new Black Music stage, upper level
It’s stylish and easy to be fashionably earth-friendly in the Twin Cities. Models will display eco-fashions available from Expo exhibitors. All featured apparel and accessories are made of sustainable fabrics and recycled materials that are friendly to both the earth and its inhabitants.

5 p.m.
Explore the Expo with other students from the tent, visit the food court and talk more about the day's events, and connect with other companies and organizations that are working on inspiring projects!
3 p.m. to
5 p.m.
Kids Disco presented by 89.3 The Current.
Music host Barb Abney from The Current provides tunes that families can dance to together. It's music that is fun, upbeat, and enjoyable for all generations of music lovers. (All ages welcome; geared towards kids 2-8 and their families.)

Make breakfast at the Youth Tent!
Come blend your own smoothie with our bike blender! Fresh, organic fruit donated by the Wedge Co-op will be available FOR FREE! to throw into the "bike blender" to make yourself a fresh fruit smoothie!

11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Cameras in the Landscape: Discovering Places and Spaces
Photographer Darcy LeVigne directs this workshop for children and youth.
11 a.m. to Noon
Danza Mexica Cuauhtémoc: Chalchiutlicue Environmental Project
Develop your relationship with the natural world and learn how community environmental education is practiced through ancient and contemporary Mexica/Azteca culture. Learn a basic dance and rhythm based on traditional concepts of environmental science.

Student Empowerment and Community Change
Talk with students from Minneapolis and St. Paul who have changed their community through outreach and education. Eco-Education students have built gardens, handed out light bulbs, talked to elementary schools, and informed adults about a wide range of environmental issues. Come hear their success stories, find out how you can effect change in your community, and share your own experiences with personal empowerment by contributing to your community.

2 p.m.

Students Speak Out: Spoken-word Eco-Poetry Slam
Poets and songwriters from the School for Environmental Studies and Perpich Center for the Arts High School will host a spoken-word workshop followed by an Open Mic for students to share their passion for words and the environment. Local spoken-word and hip-hop artist Desdamona will also be there to share her experience, insight and wisdom—as well as her poems! Come perform your pieces, listen to others and and get feedback.
